Bathing Cat Step by step Guide

We usually bathe my cats in the kitchen sink. I find it easier to control the cat and keep everything I need close by. Our preference is CHI Gentle 2 in1 Pet Shampoo & Conditioner.

What you need:

Cat-safe shampoo — preferably a gentle, moisturizing shampoo made specifically for cats

2–3 clean towels — one for the bottom of the sink and others for drying

Soft washcloth for the face

Comb or brush for before and after the bath

Cup or small container for rinsing

Warm water and washbowl with ladle

Paper towels for quick cleanups

Hair dryer if your cat tolerates it — use the lowest/warm setting and keep it at a safe distance

The ideal water temperature for a cat bath is lukewarm, around 98°F to 102°F (37°C to 39°C). This matches a cat's normal body temperature, feeling comfortably warm like a baby's bath on your wrist.

Make sure the room is warm and comfortable: Before bathing the cat, ensure the room temperature is comfortable and slightly warmer than usual. Cats can become chilled quickly when their fur is wet, so keeping the room warm helps them stay comfortable and reduces the risk of getting cold. Don't forget to turn off A/C.

Step by step:

1. Prepare everything first. Have your shampoo, towels, washcloth and everything else ready before putting the cat in the sink. You don't want to leave a wet cat unattended while you look for something. Trimming the cat’s nails before the bath is highly recommended, especially if the cat is nervous or not accustomed to bathing.

2. Put a towel on the bottom of the sink. This is very important. The towel gives the cat something to grip with their paws and helps them feel secure instead of slipping on the smooth sink.

3. Use comfortably warm water. The water should feel warm but never hot. Keep the water level low—there is no need to fill the sink.

4. Wet the body slowly. Gently wet the cat from the neck down. Avoid getting water directly into the ears, eyes and nose.

5. Shampoo the coat. Use a small amount of cat shampoo and gently massage it into the coat. Don't scrub aggressively.

6. Rinse extremely well. This is one of the most important steps. Make sure all shampoo is completely rinsed out, especially around the belly, legs and neck.

7. Clean the face separately.  Don't pour water over the face. Use a damp washcloth to gently clean around the eyes, cheeks and chin.

8. Towel dry immediately. Wrap the cat in a soft towel and gently pat and squeeze the coat dry. Don't rub too aggressively, especially with a long coat.

9. Brush the coat. Once the coat is partially dry, gently brush or comb it to prevent tangles and keep the fur looking beautiful.

10. Keep the cat warm until completely dry. If your cat is comfortable with a hair dryer, use a low, warm setting and keep it moving rather than concentrating the air in one spot. Many cats prefer being towel-dried instead.

Our biggest tip: Stay calm and gentle. Cats can sense when you're nervous. Make the bath as quick, quiet and comfortable as possible, and always reward your kitty afterward with lots of love and a treat!
